Installation oils on paper, Bordeaux, France, 2023

Kristine Moran (b.1974) is a mid-career visual artist best known for having a painting practice that employs an abstract approach to convey autobiographical experiences. With a career spanning two decades, Moran has continually evolved her artistic approach, working across series within larger thematic concerns, creating a distinctive body of work that has ranged from figurative-based lyrical abstraction; to hard-edged geometric abstraction featuring the Madcap Swimmer as its central protagonist. Her recent work calls upon a vocabulary of gestures the artist has developed over time to explore ideas surrounding the public garden as a place that reflects historical utopian desires and aspirations.  The artist has consistently explored the possibilities of certain formal elements—such as gesture and, above all, colour—combining references to art history, utopian history, and the personal, to create work that is characterized by an interplay between the formally composed and considered, and the spontaneous and instinctive.

Born in Montreal, Kristine Moran earned a BFA from the Ontario College of Art and Design in 2004 and went on to earn an MFA from Hunter College, NYC in 2008. Her work is included in the collections of the Buffalo AKG Art Museum, the Glenbow Museum, the University of Toronto and the Tom Thomson Art Gallery. She has exhibited at Monica DeCardenas Gallery, Milan; Western Exhibitions, Chicago; Nicelle Beauchene Gallery in New York City; The Hole NYC; the Daniel Faria Gallery in Toronto; and the Glenbow Museum in Calgary. Her work has been featured in Phaidon’s painting anthology, Vitamin P2: New Perspectives in Painting and has been reviewed in Artforum, FlashArt, MOMUS, Hyperallergic and Artslant.com, as well as in print in NYArts Magazine, Canadian Art Magazine, Bordercrossings, Art Papers, Elle Magazine, and Harper’s.

Represented by the Daniel Faria Gallery in Toronto.
